If you’re wondering how I make these pages, here’s a step-by-step and tool-by-tool breakdown of how I do it.

tools of the trade for making webcomics

SCRIPT:

I script this comic using a Strathmore Sketchbook of recycled paper measuring 5.5 x 8.5 inches. The early pages were scripted with Prismacolor fine line illustration pens, until I switched it to my current mechanical pencil (more on this in a second).

PENCILS:

The comic is drawn on Strathmore Vellum Bristol paper measuring 11 x 17 inches, using a Tombow Monograph shaker mechanical pencil (0.5 lead).

INKS:

Inks were done traditionally, with a Tombow Fudenosuke Twin Tip Brush Pen. The pencils were erased using a Kum eraser (for the ergonomics and the small details), Faber-Castell kneaded erasers (for broad strokes and fine details), and the Sakura SumoGrip Retractable Graphite Eraser (for broad strokes, though it tends to lift the inks too much, so I tend to use this to erase edge lines).

ALL THE REST:

Colors, Letters, and formatting for printing is all done with Clip Studio Paint.
