  • PAGE 313 Panel 1: Wide panel. Jamie (in the lead), Thomas, and Daniel are running at full speed up the steps and past the trees. Panel 2: Wide panel, we see Thomas and Daniel running into the mouth of the tunnel that leads to Dogona. Panel 3: Wide panel. At the base of the stairs Jamie and friends just ascended, Ranki approaches. Something shuffles in the bushes nearby. The trees around him are gnarled and drawn in faded lines, as if touched by otherworldly magic. Panel 4: Ranki glances down at a Nohni, a small critter that leaps out of the bushes. It has a purple racoon-like body and a white mask like a wide-eyed bird, with a large black mouth. Its blue ears are lowered, and its fur bristles as it hisses at Ranki.

  • PAGE 310 Panel 1: Wide panel. Thomas pulls the knife out from Ranki's shoulder. As Ranki winces, a trail of black blood follows the arc of where Thomas moves. In the background, Jamie watches, alarmed at what they see. Panel 2: Wide panel. Closer in on Thomas and Jamie. Thomas yells, "MOSEY!" Jamie yells, "Right!" Panel 3: Jamie and Thomas both RUN AWAY into the bushes. Ranki, his back to the viewer, watches them flee. Panel 4: Medium close-up on Ranki, looking confused as he talks to himself. "'Mosey'? Is that a name or a code - ?" Panel 5: An arrow goes THOT into his pectoral and Ranki screams. Panel 6: Cut to the shadows of the surrounding trees and bushes. Daniel runs to the right of the page, panicked. In the background we see Ranki clutching the arrow in his chest.

Thomas kicks Jamie in the side, shouting "Sorry!" Panel 4: Thomas steps back and Jamie regains their footing just as Ranki's sword swing strikes down between the two of them.

Panel 4: Ranki frowns with a "HMPH". Panel 5: Thomas, worried, draws the Knife of Leona, a curved blade, and moves to fight.

  • Panel 1: Wide panel. Daniel hides behind a tree, drawing another yellow-feathered arrow from a quiver on his hip. He looks startled. Panel 2: Wide panel. We see Thomas close-up in the foreground, watching as Jamie runs towards Ranki with a ready sword. Ranki is distracted by the arrow that got shot into his dark arm. Far to the left we see Daniel in shadow behind one of the twisted trees. Panel 3: We see over Ranki’s shoulder as Jamie charges at him, sword raised and teeth bared in rage. Panel 4: We see over Jamie’s shoulder as they charge at Ranki. Ranki bends down, left hand on the hilt of his sword, teeth bared.

  • Panel 1: THUD. The sword is so heavy that Thomas is pulled down with it as it hits the ground. Panel 2: Thomas squats and struggles to lift the sword, grinding his teeth and shaking. Panel 3: Close up on Thomas’ hands. Ranki’s hand comes into the frame as he says, “I will take - “ Panel 4: “THAT.” Ranki leans in close and grins menacingly at Thomas, startling the young man. Panel 5: Wide panel. Thomas hops away with a NOPE and gets back to Jamie’s side, fists raised. Ranki chuckles, using the sword like a makeshift stick to get himself back up. The hand he uses to do so, however, is black like a Mocktaw, which Jamie notices.

  • Panel 1: Medium shot of Ranki, his hand on his hip and his head tilted all cocky as he grins and says, “Or WHAT? You will take my sword?” Panel 2: Ranki says, “You have TWO on your belt!” We see Jamie wielding one sword as the other, Mocktaw’ess Kass, is strapped on their other hip. Panel 3: Wide panel. Thomas runs up to the sword in the stump, hand outstretched. Jamie is caught off-guard. Panel 4: Close up on Ranki. He’s startled to see this. Panel 5: Close up on Thomas’ hand clasping the hilt of the sword in the stump. Panel 6: Thomas pulls the massive sword from the stump with a wide stance and a SHHIII -

  • Three wide comic panels show a scene where a bulky, red-headed man faces two young people, his back to the viewer. Between him and the youths is a tree stump with a sword placed in it, like the sword in the stone. In the first panel, the red-headed man says, “What a surprise to see the little pirate here at Shippu Kass…” The two youths are ready to fight. The genderqueer blonde is ready to draw their sword. The brunette young man has his fists wrapped and raised for boxing. Panel 2, we zoom in medium close-up on the youths. The brunette, Thomas, whispers, “’Little Pirate’?” The blonde, Jamie, whispers back, “He doesn’t know my name. Or yours, either. Keep it that way.” In panel 3, the bulky man takes a step towards the stump with the sword. We can see the bulky man’s hand form a fist. Something supernatural and black covers his fist. Jamie draws their sword and aims it at the bulky man, shouting, “STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, RANKI!”
